Our Addiction to Being Right
March 16, 2020This addiction is amygdala in action. Our reptilian brain is on high alert, and we see the world from a very I-centric lens. Just remember, when you are on the receiving end of someone who is addicted to being right, you will probably close down or go into fight mode yourself (we got mirror neurons to ensure that!).
The next time you find yourself wanting to be right in an exchange, take a pause. Quiet down that pesky voice inside your head and listen to what is being said by others. Find more ways to suspend judgment and slide into curiosity. Empathy begins there. You do not need to give up your point of view. You do need to open up to the ideas of others to share in their virtual intelligent space. You will be surprised how difficult conversations can be productive if you bring dancing shoes rather than MMA gloves.
